Lampholder Lighting Design projects
We specialise in energy-efficient lighting for domestic and residential properties – houses, flats and residential accommodation. Here are some of our recent projects.
Picture lights Our client wanted to display some treasured paintings. To avoid the limitations of wall fixtures or recessed wall-washers in the ceiling, we devised a way of siting LED cubes at a suitable angle. We used ACDC 25mm LED mini-cubes, with a single1.4 watt Luxeon LED, mounted in pairs on purpose-built pattresses. Each cube has some lateral adjustment to cope with different sized pictures. This provides the desired accent lighting for the individual paintings, which can be adjusted on a step dimmer to match the overall level of illumination in the room.
A new Eco-home Working from architect’s drawings, Lampholder designed a lighting scheme for a large new Eco-home being built in rural Wales. Special conditions for an Eco-home mean that all lighting has to be energy-efficient, so no tungsten or halogen lights are permissible. Equally, because the house was in a remote area and generating its own power, the owners wanted to minimise the power they used for lighting. Our designs included estimates of daytime and evening lighting power loads to help with energy planning.
A country kitchen The kitchen has a skylight that dominates the ceiling. The lighting scheme needed to take account of this feature, particularly to avoid it creating a ‘black hole’ at night. We specified multi-purpose fibre optic lighting with 150 watt metal halide. Some of the 30 fibre optic tails, which are adjustable, light the upstands and the apex of the skylight, whilst others form a soft fixed downlight feature mounted around the outside edge of the structure.
Working from home A client who runs their business from home wanted to be able to use their dining room as a meeting/conference room. This required a versatile scheme to light the room suitably for several different purposes. Our solution A combination of compact fluorescent, low voltage halogen, standard tungsten and LED light sources was used, with the majority being dimmable. Rise and fall pendant lights were selected to provide bright work light for the meeting room table; these have electronic ballast and a 10 watt CFL. The hand-made torpedo-shape glass lampshades from Adrian Sankey are available in various colours – ruby ones were chosen to complement the internal décor. Background lighting was provided through traditional wall lights and LED picture lights. Accent lighting in the window recess was produced with recessed low voltage halogen lights with drop glass covers.
Room refurbishment When Heritage House Day Care Centre in Norfolk recently refurbished their large day room, they asked Lampholder to redesign the lighting. Our design took account of the need for enhanced lighting in the dining area at mealtimes, and that soft ambient lighting would be needed when the room was used for evening functions. Switching flexibility was also critical and we provided a 16-gang switch panel.
